A recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald by Deacons technology and telecommunications partner Nick Abrahams discusses the use of Facebook in the office.

Clearly there are some issues but the important point here is "social" networking and in particular Facebook. Facebook has been developed as a consumer based product and not an "enterprise" networking product and there is a big difference in the approach taken. Why try and shoehorn an application into place when there are several outstanding options in the marketplace that were built from the ground up for enterprises.

In fact one of the co-founders of Facebook, Dustin Moskovitz is leaving the company to start his own organisation to concentrate on building an extensible enterprise productivity suite which clearly recognises that Facebook is not an enterprise productivity solution.
